About the Young Health Programme

AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme has a unique focus on young people and the prevention of major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, heart and respiratory disease. Working with over 30 expert organisations and combining on the ground programmes, research and advocacy, it targets the risk behaviours such as tobacco use, alcohol abuse, lack of exercise and unhealthy eating that can lead to these diseases in adulthood. A particular focus is placed on working with marginalised young people.

    Before YHP:

Around the age of 12, I started drinking spirits, mainly like vodka, rum and whisky.

    My Story:

I’ve never met my mother and I don’t know any of her family. To start with I lived with my grandmother but, after she died, I went to live with my father and his current wife. Growing up I have suffered a lot, especially when friends would ask me where my mother was. Some people told me it was my fault my mother left because of my behaviour and when I heard this I would get angry.

Around the age of 12, I started drinking spirits, mainly like vodka, rum and whisky. I also started making myself vomit on purpose and I lost a lot of weight. I was also cutting myself on my abdomen and legs with a steel blade.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

When I joined, the YHP group was talking about sexuality and after that we talked about many things: drugs, adolescent friendly health services, non-communicable diseases, health eating and violence.

YHP helped me by linking me to a doctor and psychologist. Since I joined the project my friends and family have noticed lots of changes in me. Nowadays I have good dialogue with my father. When I understood that alcohol could not solve my problems I asked my father if he could buy me a guitar. I joined a singing class at the local church and I also started a technical course. I stopped cutting myself as I realised that there were other things I could do with my life. I talked to a nutritionist about my bulimia and now my eating habits have changed and I am eating much more healthy food too. I have learnt a lot in these sessions. I have become a different person.

I felt my life was boring and going round in circles every day.

    My Story:

I am at high school and live with my parents and brother who is at university.

Before getting involved in YHP I wasn’t very interested in youth mental health or prevention of youth suicide.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

I took part in YHP activity themed around respect for life and prevention of youth suicide. During the training we watched a film about a teenager who was isolated from her friends. It raised my awareness about young people who may be suicidal and taught me how to respond to them appropriately. It made me reflect on my own behaviour towards my friends. I realised that I need to be more attentive to how my friends and family are feeling. I fully respect everyone’s life now and feel my relationships with my friends are better than before. It is a remarkable change due to YHP.

I dream of being a designer. I want to design something which can touch people’s hearts.

    Before YHP:

I became interested in youth engagement and mental health initiatives; an interest I wouldn’t have found without mindyourmind and YHP Canada.

    My Story:

As a musician, I was invited to perform at the launch of YHP Canada. The launch acted as my platform into mindyourmind and YHP. I now work as the youth lead in partnership development at a NGO and have continued to work with youth and service providers across Ontario.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

Since 2011 I’ve worked on multiple YHP projects. I worked on mindyourmood, a smartphone mood tracking app and mytoolkit.ca, a website for service providers with information modules on stress and wellness.

I got involved with mental health initiatives because of my love and interest in music. Without mindyourmind and the YHP programme, I wouldn’t have discovered my love for mental health advocacy and youth engagement. It proves that when organisations work alongside young people and listen to what they have to say, we create better resources and have better mental health outcomes. As a result of my involvement, I’ve cultivated skills in leadership and public speaking; skills I now have the confidence to take with me to future endeavours.

    Before YHP:

When I was in high school I began using drugs and not long after dropped out.

    My Story:

I was born to a single mother. In the early years I had a normal life but, in middle school, I began to experience a variety of issues due to the fact that my father wasn’t around or involved in my life. I began fighting and got suspended from school.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

After two years battling a drug addiction, my friend encouraged me to seek treatment and turn my life around. After being clean for six months, I was introduced to YHP which helped me to start to reflect on my life experience. I realised that I had people who loved and cared for me and had a vested interest in my life. I began working as a Youth Engagement Assistant. I also started a movement to address youth gun violence and the impact of negative music lyrics on youth. All this resulted in me being offered a full scholarship to attend university. I plan on helping others in the community to create opportunities for themselves and to realise that, no matter what they have been through, there are options. I now see my life has a purpose.

Adolescents now account for 25% of the world’s population

Life can be hard as a young person. We’re faced with many challenges on a daily basis by just growing up and trying to find ourselves. But for some of us, life can be just that little bit harder.

We want to tell you our stories, our challenges, our successes and, most importantly, how the Young Health Programme has changed our lives.

I was so badly anaemic from a poor diet that my life was in danger.

    My Story:

At meal times I would just be given the leftovers as my father and brother would eat first and then my mother and sisters and I would eat whatever was left.

I needed an urgent blood transfusion but the blood bank at the hospital only provides blood in exchange for blood given and money. My father could only donate one unit of blood which wasn’t enough.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

The YHP staff were able to help and a week later I was well enough to leave the hospital. After this the YHP staff explained to my mother and me all about the importance of nutritious and healthy food to help avoid anaemia, as well as how it can help prevent other diseases like diabetes.

To start with my mother was worried about the cost of changing our diet but the YHP staff told her it was very important and suggested low cost nutritious food items. Now my family cares about healthy food and now I have started eating properly and feel much better and am working hard at school. I attend 11th grade and I’m interested in all the subjects. In the future I would like to become a teacher. Thank you so much YHP.

As a cattle herder there was peer pressure to engage in behaviours that are risky to my health; such as sexual encounters, tobacco smoking and beer drinking.

    My Story:

I am one of five children and the second boy. My family are subsistence farmers and grow enough food just to feed my family. Like other boys in my community, I started herding cattle at a young age. Cattle herding is a way to make money for the payment of the bride price when a son wants to marry.

My health was not the only aspect of my life to suffer when I was a herder …. I didn’t start school until I was 15 years old.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

At school I have been connected to the YHP. I have joined a health club and have taken part in meetings that are run at school by the YHP Peer Educators. I attended an Insaka which means it was a separate meeting for boys and girls to discuss health issues. At the boys’ meeting we discussed sexual and reproductive health, particularly how to care and protect ourselves from different STIs and HIV. After this we met the girls and discussed the same issues with them to learn their perspective. I am happy that I’m now able to pass this sexual reproductive health information onto my peers. Now I want to have a full education and finish grade twelve despite being older than the other students.

Every day I see weak guys who always have cigarettes and bottles of beer in their hands. I don’t want to be like them.

    My Story:

I live and study in an orphanage in a small town. We rarely get opportunities to mix with other children from outside the orphanage. Most of the young people I know in the orphanage have unhealthy lifestyles and smoking is widespread.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

The YHP is changing our lives by telling us about the negative effects of smoking, drinking too much alcohol and also by encouraging us to do regular sports. As part of YHP, professional sportsmen regularly come to the orphanage. They demonstrate by their lifestyle the image of a real man. I want to be like them. That is why I do sport and try to have a healthy lifestyle.

The regular sports activities that we have in the orphanage now are the most interesting things for me. I like to participate in contests because I like to win! I especially liked a workshop on Greco-Roman wrestling. It’s cool that we can take part in this programme.

I attempted suicide at the age of 13 after battling serious bouts of anxiety and depression.

    My Story:

Growing up, I felt so much sadness and pain that I didn't understand, it was terrifying to the point that I didn't want to live anymore. My move to university was a catalyst to seek personal help and to help others living with mental health issues. I work with governments, youth and policy makers and for both profit and non-profit businesses.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

With the assistance of the YHP, I was able to grow as a young, health advocacy professional in ways that would not have been possible otherwise. YHP helped me view the Canadian health landscape differently; it opened my eyes to how mental health issues affect societies on a national and international level.

Through YHP, I have been able to co-create a crowd funding, incubator and mentorship platform that helps young Canadians develop and raise funds for mental health projects in their communities. Young people aren’t always given the opportunity to engage meaningfully in creating the change they think will be helpful, so it was my dream to help empower young change makers across Canada.

The YHP has helped my journey by providing wonderful mentorship, guidance, meaningful empowerment and networking opportunities. The programme really helped shape what I want to pursue career wise.

Through my work in trying to make the world a more mentally healthy place, I’ve been described as a ‘mental health superhero’.

I was an alcoholic, regularly drinking large quantities and making reckless health decisions.

    My Story:

Before YHP I didn’t know about sexually transmitted infections and their dangers. I didn’t think or care about having unprotected sex.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

Through training to be a YHP Peer Educator, I learnt about sexual reproductive health and also about the health impact of alcohol abuse. I acquired a lot of information which has changed my way of life; moving from a risky, careless life to a sober and proactive one. I stopped drinking alcohol and focused on more positive activities.

I spend most of my time at the health centre working to save other lives because of the great benefit I have experienced through YHP. I am able to talk to my friends about the importance of sexual health and encourage them to visit the health centre whenever they have a problem. Now I can happily say I know a good and bad way of living.

My ambition is to work in the health sector. One day I would like to be able to manage a project like YHP myself.

    My Story:

I belong to the generation of young Spaniards with an immigrant background. At 14 I was living with my Dominican mother, her partner and my younger brother. It was hard to talk to my mother about sex because of her bad experiences. I didn’t want to make the same mistakes as her. I always had a ‘no’ on my lips.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

Through the YHP I have been able to overcome my problems with self-esteem and tackle my poor eating habits. I know the importance of eating healthily. The sexual and emotional workshops helped me to overcome my fears and learn how to handle my emotions. Also I have the information to decide what is the best thing for me; so I am not influenced by anyone. I feel confident about myself, watch my diet and exercise regularly. I have now been let loose into the world with the tools that I need to make good decisions. I have very ambitious dreams for the future.

I reacted badly to certain situations and had problems with eating. I didn’t have a balanced diet either.

    My Story:

I was 11 when I arrived in Spain from Equatorial Guinea. I left behind my mother and sisters to live with my great aunt, my uncles and aunt. One of my relatives had a disability. My early life was difficult; I was ill and found it hard to adapt to my family and school in Spain.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

Through the sexual and emotional education provided by YHP I have learnt to interact with other people in a healthy manner, to think things through before acting and to value and respect myself. I also learnt about the importance of healthy eating and not taking drugs. I have been a ‘teacher’ for my classmates and friends by passing on everything that I have learnt about preventing drug addiction. I am very proud of that. YHP has been an important part of my life for the last four years. It has helped me in my personal development and professional future. Today, I am focused on my studies and want to improve myself. My dreams are simple ones: to travel, have a family and, ultimately, to be happy.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

YHP has had a positive impact on my behaviour. I learnt to accept myself as I am, to have more confidence in myself and to stop being a bully. It became too much for me to handle and, slowly, I was breaking.

    My Story:

My mother struggled with a drug abuse problem. Despite trying to fight her addiction, she relapsed and died of an overdose aged 33. I was 8 years old at the time. I didn’t know how to react. I was upset and angry, but thought I had to move on and be strong, not only for myself but for my family too. Growing up without a mother has been difficult.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

I felt as if I was responsible for making sure everyone was okay but not myself. As I entered high school I began to feel a lot of pressure. I had a heavy course workload, was involved in community projects and was dealing with family issues. It became too much for me. My eating habits changed, my grades fell and I became closed off to the world. My friends encouraged me to get professional help and, when the opportunity arose to be part of the Flex Your Head mental health awareness programme, I jumped on board. I knew if I could educate myself on the importance of taking care of your mental health, I could take this information to my school and peers.

Now I have been accepted to study social work at university and plan to work with mental health and addictions. I have taken from a negative experience to help others suffering in silence.

YHP was happening at my school and I saw one of the dramas they did about sexuality. It captured my interest and I decided to join. I had already been very active at school in sports and human rights but, I wanted to learn more through YHP about other topics, so I could discuss them with confidence at school, home or out with friends.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

What motivates me most about YHP is that young people like me spread the word themselves.

I was chosen to take part in a consultation process on the statewide health work plan. We saw a need for change. Many things important to adolescents simply weren’t mentioned. We knew no one could understand better what it is like for a young person to go to a health post and not get the help they need. We made many suggestions to improve the health work plan for young people. These were officially approved by the Health Secretariat and the revised plan will be implemented across our whole state.

Even though I am young I can still play a role and have a voice within all the spaces that deal with public policy and young people.

What started as two or three cigarettes a day became more like seven to eight. I started to feel addicted.

    My Story:

I live with my mother and elder brother. My father died and my brother now runs the family. Because of our poverty I had to leave school.

When I was 16 I started smoking in secret, stealing cigarettes from my brother’s pockets. My habit was quite expensive and, as cigarettes cost more, I replaced them with a chewing tobacco called Gutka. I used to feel cool and calm after smoking or chewing tobacco, and then I would feel tense and under pressure if I went for more than half a day without. Chewing Gutka also made my teeth look dirty and they became very sensitive especially when I drank anything cold. When my brother found out he scolded me harshly.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

My friend was a member of the Health Information Centre (HIC) and told the staff there. They visited me at home and talked to me in private. They weren’t harsh with me like my brother and mother; they listened to what I told them. I joined the HIC and have learnt about many health related issues. YHP has helped me quit tobacco and understand that any kind of substance misuse can be bad for my health. YHP has brought my life back on the track of light from the dark. HIC staff also helped improve my relations with my family; they met my brother and mother ... now we talk more at home and my brother even wants me to start further education! Joining the YHP is a turning point in my life.

My school first introduced me to YHP. I became a Healthy Living Ambassador and, as a youth educator, I have worked on ‘asset building’ lessons for adults and younger teenagers.

YHP has opened up my world to different possibilities. I want to be more involved in helping others, contributing to the community and building my own assets. My aim is to study biology and go to medical school. I want to be a surgeon.

You never know if you’re going to like something until you do it. Be open and just try things.

    Before YHP:

I was insecure and felt scared of moving outside my comfort zone.

    My Story:

My parents grew up in Turkey. They lived a different life and had a different upbringing. I used to stay at home studying and rarely saw other places. I was very careful and was simply too insecure to go anywhere.

  • How the Young Health Programme helped me:

The YHP mentor programme has been good for me. Before I wasn’t keen on using public transport and double-checked my travel plans again and again. Now I can travel on the subway.

My mentor has helped me find my way; not only when it comes to which high school courses I should choose or what summer jobs I should apply for, but by encouraging me to try new things.

I have become more courageous, both in terms of the things I get involved in and the things I can discuss with my mentor. I can say what I think and want without difficulty.

I am curious about the future and the adult world.
